Description

Not just my first PC, but also the first PC I've built.

Finished this good n' proper around August 2021 with some help from my friends, both in recommendations in figuring out what parts I'd need for a PC for gaming, but mainly video editing, and helping me troubleshoot the many, many, MANY problems I encountered.

While I do see the appeal in building PCs and while this definitely won't be the last time I do it, whoever said "PC building is like adult lego" can go shove a 4090 up where the sun don't shine...sideways. The stress brought on by a faulty P5 SSD (Thanks Crucial), the blue screen crashes brought on by the 3700x I originally bought for this (cheers AMD) and the overall mood it put me in made building this thing a bit of a nightmare. I wanted to make this build happen mainly to give myself a real chance to go for a video editing career.

When it was finally over and I got it all up and running, having upgraded the original choices for the SSD and CPU (I can still feel the residual pain my wallet felt from that), I'm still glad I went through it. I didn't think I'd be able to run games like Doom Eternal and Devil May Cry 5 on Ultra and I didn't expect my Premiere Pro rendering times to go like a rocket. I have also since edited my first official video game trailers on build, creating the main launch trailer and the demo trailer for the ARMA III DLC "S.O.G: Prarie Fire".

Originally I named it 'Lady' after the character from the Devil May Cry series because while I knew it wouldn't be the absolute best possible, I knew it would still feel absolutely amazing, especially having done all my computing on a 2016 MSI gaming laptop up until then (a laptop I spilled hot chocolate on once btw lmao).

Upgrade Ideas:

  • Currently looking to upgrading the case to something with a lot more airflow, like a 4000D or a Lancool 216 and I might be able to buy my mate's barely used 3090 off him (he's getting a 40 series somehow) so I'll likely give myself a bigger overhead and get a 1000W power supply.

  • Definitely should think about an aftermarket CPU cooler but don't know where to start or how to check size clearences. Would PC Building Simulator 2 help me figure out if the one(s) I want fit in whatever case I end up getting?

  • Would also be a good idea to get more RAM for editing but I don't know if I should just get 2 more sticks of the ram I already have or get a different set.

  • I suppose at some point down the line I'll get a 5 series AMD CPU but I'm in no rush for that I think. I should also probably look into AM5 motherboards but again, no rush.

Part Reviews

CPU

Amazing CPU for people looking to build a video editing focused build.

Video Card

Surprisingly great little GPU. Runs Doom Eternal on High at 1440p and 120fps (Raytracing off). Haven't found a game that this card can power Raytracing with at a steady frame rate above 30 and more and more games like just a bit more than 6gigs of VRAM but an absolute recommend if you can find it for less than $400 (I paid over £550 cus of how this market is about as stable as my mental health)

Case

Not an awful case but there are definitely better options out there at this price point, especially in airflow. Also not bad when installing components as the few bits that could get in the way are removable but could do with better cable management routing.

Monitor

I'd need special picture calibration tools to see how accurate the colours really are but if you're looking for a monitor that's both great to game on and provides enough accuracy to also do creative work this is a fantastic pick.
