Description

This build was created at the request of a friend. The requirements were simple, a machine that could play today's games reasonably well, a system that could handle video editing, light coding/software dev, general everyday usage including internet, HD video's and word processing as well as a system with 2x CD/DVD Burner drives for CD copying.

There were several places where I thought we might be going "Overkill" e.g. the Motherboard/Processor, but I was told not to change them and my friend likes "over-kill". He also wanted to get top of the line products because this system has to last 5+ years.

That being said I was familiar with Gigabyte, the i7-4770k, Crucial RAM and EVGA graphics from my first build (for me) located here; http://pcpartpicker.com/b/HIs, so I stuck with what I knew from a brand perspective.

A major change and request was that this system be QUIET. He had no interest in seeing the "insides' of fancy LED's etc. I decided to introduce him to the Define R4 based on its noise insulation and generally excellent reviews on /r/buildapc etc.

He loved it. As far as building in it goes, it was fairly good - not as easy as the Air 540, and some things regarding drive placement, etc. is a bit annoying but otherwise it looks and sounds great.

Everything else went off without a hitch, please enjoy the few pictures I took above!

Very nice! Part choice should last him a while and the cable management is relatively clean.

How come you rated the R4 3 stars?

For next time you build, don't get the CX series, UNLESS it's the 750watt since it's another OEM.

Other than that. It's a really good build for the perpose.

I looked into the CX, it's OEM from Seasonic or....Westinghouse (or somethi ng like that) both pretty reputable...Have you heard otherwise?

http://www.overclock.net/t/1431436/why-you-should-not-buy-a-corsair-cx It's not a Seasonic or a Westinghouse OEM, if it was it wouldn't look like that. If you look at seasonics 500w units they have much better voltage regulators and they have japenense caps rated for 105c and not chinese caps rated for 80c from CapXon that's a the reason why many PSU are so bad(The main capacitor is a Panasonic, but the rest is CapXon). I'm not saying the CX series is bad, It's just not made for a gaming rig. It's made to power basic builds like a Office pc, a HTPC or something similar. I don't know where you got they're a Seasonic OEM, it would a bit weird since I am pretty sure they're Channel Well OEMs

the only corsair seasonic OEM is the HX, AX and TX series. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-oem-manufacturer,2913-5.html

CWT is not a bad manufacture. It's just that this paticular OEM is really not meant to be a PC with high load components.

Light gaming on this rig anyway - i'm sure its fine.

I hope so, It's just you can spent maybe 10 more dollar on another PSU that's gonna handle the load a lot better, and it's not to bash the build on anything, it's just to educate why getting the CX series isn't always a good decision when you can get a XFX psu that is a Seasonic OEM

I have an XFX 1250 watt Pro series on my build that is used for heavy gaming etc.

This was a build for not me.....this is going to be used for light gaming (games from like 2008 mostly) and other non-intensive tasks. I didn't buy the PSU without considering it's use. Also I got the PSU for $40 bucks after rebates so more than $10 more for a better one perhaps?

Also there won't be overclocking on this. Seems like this is a perfectly fine PSU except for the review you posted; i'm confident it will work out, and thus far no problems. Thanks for the info though - I def. would go XFX/Seasonic if it was needed, but again - fairly basic build. (yes I know 4770k is over-kill...)

I honestly love the aesthetics of the R4, but as far as ease of build it wasn't as good as the Air 540 - and I don't love the hard drive placement, I had to put my storage drive up the top (and leave the whole HD cage in) so I could fit my wires too it..

I mean it's a fine case, but I have to compare it to what I've used and the Air 540 was a 5 star, so this is a 3. I guess it could of been 4, since the guy I built it for loves it and it's super quiet though.

You can flip the drive bays both ways, and you can take them out, so It's shouldn't be a problem.
